A splendid ballet Coppelia by Alexei Ratmansky an enjoyable new production created for the La Scala Theatre, a premiere that opened the Ballet Season 2023-2024. The opera was first performed in 1870 at the Paris Opéra with beautiful music by Léo Delibeswhich brings it to be considered among the masterpieces of the repertoire. On the podium Paul Connelly to direct the La Scala Orchestra.
A new, difficult choreography that follows the canons of the original edition, but with a modern reinterpretation loaded with stylistic colourings that emphasise the harmonies of this masterpiece.
The action takes place in Galicia, currently a region of Ukraine, where Ratmansky grew up. This inspired him with Ukrainian costumes and folk dances performed by Jérôme Kaplanwith the lights of Marco Filibeck.
The story tells of Coppelius an eccentric who dedicates his life to making dolls and who wants to transform an automaton, Coppelia, into a girl with human features. But it is Swanilda, engaged to Franz, who is the centre of the action and who, with her intelligence and resolve, teaches us to look beyond, especially in love.

Martina Arduino, brings to the stage an energetic, versatile and strong-willed girl who enchants audiences with her comic and interpretative skills Marco Agostino is Franz, the naive and impeccable boy, who enchants with his technique and leaps assisted by a wealth of stylistic and choreographic colouring and nuances. Together the protagonists take the acting to heights of great intensity, enrapturing the audience who reciprocate with constant ovations. Massimo Garon is the perfidious Coppelius, Vittoria Valerio stands out in the allegorical variation.
The Corps de Ballet always lives up to the action.
I have twice enjoyed this masterpiece the first time with the couple Nicoletta Manni,Timofej Andrijashenko e Christian Faggetti as Coppelius. The second with Martina Arduino e Marco Agostino In both cases, the dancers gave personal and highly enjoyable interpretations. An entertaining performance with a sensational second act that cannot fail to captivate with its plot, versatility, comprehensiveness and topicality of the theme.
