by Emanuela Beretta

For the first time at La Scala, the Teatro alla Scala is performing Rusalka Antonin Dvorak's masterpiece brought to the stage beautifully by the musical direction of maestro Tomáš Hanus and the direction of Emma Dante. The artistic synergy is of the highest level Carmine Maringola offers fascinating scenes such as the introduction of a pond from which nymphs emerge, while Vanessa Sannino enriches the production with precious yet technological and evocative costumes. Yes, because for the first time on stage at La Scala we find a lake with real water, and herein lies the difficulty in the choice of fabrics for superb costumes.

The score of 'Rusalka' is a triumph of Czech impressionism, which is not intended to depict a fairy tale, but to tell the various aspects of love and music with great lyrical impact and colourings that blend elements of Bohemian folk music, creating an enchanted soundscape.

'Rusalka' is the water nymphs and the story of an unhappy love. Our Rusalka, in love with the prince, gives up her most precious possession, her voice, in order to assume human form and taste the joys of love. The fickle prince soon turns his attentions to a new princess and, Rusalka, decides to return to her primal state not before killing the prince with a kiss.

The production boasts an exceptional cast, Olga Bezsmertna  plays Rusalka  Dmitry Korchak in the role of the Prince. The cast is further enriched by Elena Guseva, Okka von der Damerau, Jongmin Park is Vodník, the spirit of the waters; they are flanked by Jiří Rajniš, Svetlina Stoyanova, Hila Fahima, Juliana Grigoryan, Valentina Pluzhnikova e Ilya Silchukou all of an exceptional standard.
